Extremely rare and collectable 1966 HOFNER AMBASSADOR semi-acoustic guitar

1,700 GBP

Extremely rare and collectable 1966 HOFNER AMBASSADOR  One of the rarest Hofners, only 430 ever built, Ambassadors were made in Germany between 1965 and 1968 as Hofner’s answer to the Gibson Barney Kessel.
Features: A “Tobacco Sunburst” thinline body (just under 2"), a laminated spruce top with flamed maple sides and a full width maple veneer on the back which has a beautiful soft marking. It has a similar multiple body binding to the President and the neck and headstock are also very similar to the President, with five laminations of maple/mahogany/beech/mahogany/maple, and a rosewood fingerboard. Headstock is mother of pearl, vine leaf inlayed into an ebony veneer. The machine heads are good quality open geared, and a truss rod is fitted. The tailpiece is the common Hofner "Lyre" design. The bridge is the Micro-matic, fully adjustable type, which from about 1965, was fitted as standard to most of Hofner's better quality guitars. It’s fitted with two De Armond pickups (an optional upgrade option at the time) controlled by one volume and two tone rotary pots. Pickup selection is via a standard toggle switch on the upper treble bout (replacing the original, very flimsy, three-way selector). As far as I know that is the only non-original part.  Unlike other Hofners, it feels sturdy and doesn’t just look like a Gibson but plays like one too. My guitar is in very good cosmetic condition with a few small scratches and dings as one would expect in a 50 year old instrument. I’ve owned it since 1982 and it has served me very well but, times change, and I’ve just not played it much in recent years. It’s a superb instrument and deserves to be seen and heard more than it is in my hands. Comes with a Westfield hard case. All details are correct to the best of my knowledge – if you have any questions, please do ask. £1,700 ono   ;
